Two killed in head-on crash involving chemical truck on N2 between Jozini and Mkuze

Two people have been killed and a child under the age of one injured following a head-on collision involving a Volkswagen Polo and an articulated truck on the N2 between the Jozini turnoff and Mkuze Bridge in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The crash happened on Wednesday evening near the Jozini off-ramp from Bethesda.

According to preliminary information, the Volkswagen Polo was travelling from Mkuze towards Jozini when it allegedly lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane.

The car then collided head-on with an articulated truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The truck was reportedly transporting Class 3 hazardous chemicals at the time of the crash.

Two people in the Polo were killed in the collision, while a child under the age of one sustained injuries and was taken for medical attention.

Emergency services, traffic officials and forensic personnel attended the scene as authorities dealt with the wreckage and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The N2 was closed in the affected area while emergency crews and forensic investigators worked at the scene. Motorists were advised to expect significant delays and to use alternative routes where possible.

The cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed.

Authorities will investigate the circumstances that led to the collision, including what caused the Polo to leave its lane and enter the path of the oncoming truck.

Further information may be released as the investigation continues.
