Two people were killed in a head-on collision involving a municipal waste truck and a Ford Everest on the N2/Lagoon Road in Knysna on Friday morning.
The crash happened at approximately 7.30am, according to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies.
Emergency services were called to the scene after the municipal truck and SUV collided head-on. The two occupants of the Ford Everest sustained serious injuries and were declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the municipal waste truck also sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
Bitou Municipality acting director for public safety Andile Namntu confirmed that the truck involved was a municipal waste management vehicle operated by Bitou Waste Services.
“Emergency services are currently on the scene attending to the incident,” Namntu said.
He warned motorists to expect significant delays in the area and urged drivers to exercise caution while travelling through the affected section of the N2.

The road was subsequently closed while emergency personnel attended to the crash and investigators worked at the scene. The closure resulted in traffic backing up along the N2 for much of the morning.
The cause of the collision has not yet been established.
SAPS has opened a culpable homicide docket, with further investigation expected to determine the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash.
Authorities said further information would be released as it becomes available.
