The Nkomazi community is reeling in shock and heartbreak after two of its most dedicated civilian road safety volunteers lost their lives in the early hours of Saturday, 23 August 2025, while serving on the frontline of road safety.
The Nkomazi N4 volunteer team, led by Hectorspruit’s well-known community leader Patrik D’Hollander, was clearing the scene of a major accident at the N4/Jeppes Reef junction when tragedy struck.
According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, a truck had overturned at the intersection.
A vehicle travelling towards Komatipoort ploughed through the well-lit incident zone at high speed, fatally injuring two volunteers and leaving a third seriously hurt.
The fallen heroes have been identified as Zelma D’Hollander, spouse of Patrik and one of the founding members of the volunteer unit, and Donovan Prince, a young man deeply committed to community service and always willing to step up in times of need. The injured volunteer, Letta Taylor, remains in critical care at Mediclinic Nelspruit.

For years, Zelma, Donovan, and their fellow volunteers have been the unseen guardians of the N4. Long before formal emergency services arrive, they are the ones directing traffic, administering first aid, and bringing calm to chaos. Their efforts have saved countless lives, especially in a region where official resources are often stretched thin.
In 2023, the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism (KLCBT) recognised Patrik and Zelma for their tireless dedication to traveller safety – a reflection of the vital role this small team has played in keeping both locals and tourists safe along one of South Africa’s busiest corridors.
Now, in the wake of this devastating incident, their sacrifice serves as a sobering reminder of the risks these volunteers take every time they put on their reflective vests.
On behalf of the Malelane and Nkomazi community, and the thousands of travellers who have unknowingly benefitted from their courage, we honour their service, their legacy, and their ultimate sacrifice.
Our deepest condolences go to the families, friends, and fellow volunteers mourning this unimaginable loss.
