The Johannesburg Flying Squad swooped in on illicit cigarette smugglers in Boksburg on Thursday, 31 October, nabbing two suspects and seizing R470,000 worth of contraband.
While patrolling the area, the Flying Squad received a tip-off about two trucks transporting a load of illegal cigarettes from Maputo, Mozambique, toward a local distribution depot on Driefontein Road, Boksburg.
Acting swiftly, they traced the trucks and set up a strategic intercept at the location.
Upon conducting a thorough search of the vehicles, officers uncovered hidden compartments loaded with 35 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes, one of the more popular brands among smugglers.
Each box bore markings showing its origin outside the country, confirming suspicions of cross-border smuggling activities.
