Ugu Residents Get Toll Relief During Mzimkhulu River Bridge Repairs

Motorists using the Marburg on and offramps at Oribi Toll Plaza will soon be spared toll charges, thanks to a move by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy.

From May 7 until November 30, drivers entering or exiting via Marburg ramps won’t need to pay toll fees.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, April 17 by KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma at the old Port Shepstone Bus Rank.

The toll fee exemption comes in light of ongoing rehabilitation work on the Mzimkhulu River Bridge along the R102 in Port Shepstone.

The minister granted the exemption to ease traffic flow and reduce financial strain on locals while the construction continues.

To facilitate this, Sanral has confirmed a rollout plan for e-tags, which will be used to manage the exempted vehicles.

The agency said it would use the period between April 17 and May 7 to identify convenient locations for motorists to collect their tags, likely at local malls, taxi and bus ranks, the toll plaza, and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality offices.

“Each car must register for an e-tag. You do not buy the tag, but for it to work it must have credit. When registering the e-tag, R50 is required. The tag will only allow you to go through if you are using the exempted lane. This is only for Ugu residents,” said Sanral.

MEC Duma assured the public that exact collection points will be communicated soon.

“We welcome the minister’s response to exempt toll fees,” Duma added.
