The planned uMzimkhulu Bridge closure, which was set to take effect on Wednesday, has been put on hold for now, according to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport.
The bridge, which serves as a key connection between Port Shepstone and areas like Umtentweni and Seapark, was meant to undergo urgent repairs.
Motorists had been advised to use the P464 or the tolled N2 as alternative routes. However, the department has now confirmed that the bridge will remain open until further discussions take place.
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya stated that a meeting with key stakeholders is scheduled for Sunday, where officials will map out alternative routes and ensure minimal inconvenience to the public.
“The bridge was severely damaged by floods, and it’s an old structure that urgently needs rehabilitation,” said Sibiya.
While the bridge remains open for now, motorists should stay updated on further announcements as plans for the repairs progress.
