A cloud of grief hangs over the trucking community following the fatal shooting of a Unitrans truck driver, Zakhele Mbulawa, in what is believed to be a road rage incident on the N3 on Sunday night.

According to information received by SA Trucker, the incident unfolded on the Johannesburg bound side of the N3, approximately six kilometres before Harrismith.

Mbulawa was reportedly driving a Unitrans tanker when he became involved in a confrontation with another truck driver from a Durban based transport company.

Sources familiar with video footage capturing part of the incident say the situation escalated after an apparent misunderstanding on the road. The driver of the second truck allegedly stopped in front of the Unitrans tanker before getting out and confronting the victim.

It is claimed that during the confrontation, the Mbulawa questioned why the other driver had been swearing at him. As tempers flared, the situation deteriorated rapidly. The source alleges that the victim reached for a pepper spray and disembarked from his truck as the argument intensified.

Footage reviewed by witnesses reportedly shows the two men moving out of the camera’s view towards the front of the other truck. It was there, according to the same source, that the Unitrans driver was shot and fatally wounded.

Emergency services were alerted, but the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His death has sent shockwaves through fellow drivers who spend long nights on South Africa’s highways trying to earn an honest living.

The other driver involved in the incident was arrested and taken into custody. He is expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue.

This devastating incident is yet another painful reminder of how quickly conflict on the road can turn deadly. For many in the trucking fraternity, this is not just another headline, but a tragic loss of a brother of the road who never made it home.
