UPDATE: Five killed in devastating N1 crash near Mookgophong

What started as a serious crash alert earlier today has now turned into a tragedy, with authorities confirming that five people have lost their lives following the head-on collision on the N1 near Mookgophong in Limpopo.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that the crash occurred at around 07:45 on the N1-25 next to Boekenhout in the Waterberg District.

According to officials, the collision involved three vehicles. A Renault light motor vehicle reportedly made a U-turn on the freeway, leading to a head-on crash with a Ford light delivery vehicle and a Toyota light delivery vehicle.

The impact was severe.

Five people were declared dead at the scene, including two male drivers and three occupants from one of the vehicles. Two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to FH Odendaal Hospital for treatment.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, expressed shock at the loss of life.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have passed away,” she said.

While investigations are still ongoing, preliminary indications point to reckless driving, with authorities suggesting the possibility of a drunk driver being involved in the incident.

The MEC has also wished those injured a speedy recovery and called on all motorists to take responsibility on the roads.

For drivers using this route, this is another harsh reminder of how quickly things can go wrong, especially on high-speed roads like the N1 where one bad decision can wipe out multiple lives.
