The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has confirmed that five people have tragically lost their lives in the multi-vehicle crash that shut down the N10 earlier today between Cookhouse and Gqeberha.

The fatal collision involved two interlink trucks and a bakkie on a remote stretch of road roughly 30 kilometres outside Cookhouse. Emergency services are still working on the scene and the situation remains fluid as rescue and recovery operations continue.

Authorities say the remoteness of the area and poor cellphone network coverage are making it difficult to receive timely and accurate updates from the ground. Communication with teams on site has been slow and officials caution that details are still being verified.

However, truck drivers at the scene reported that one truck driver and four occupants from the bakkie died on impact. Another truck driver was severely entrapped in his cab.

Photos and video shared by truckers stuck in the backlog show both trucks blocking the entire roadway, leaving traffic at a complete standstill in both directions.

The Department of Transport says it is working closely with law enforcement, EMS personnel and other stakeholders to compile a full incident report. Further updates will be provided once clearer information becomes available regarding the exact sequence of events and the condition of any survivors.

The N10 remains fully closed at this stage and motorists are urged to avoid the area completely. Those already in the queue are advised to remain patient as clearing the scene may take several hours.
