One person has tragically lost their life following a fiery crash involving two trucks at the bottom of the Van Reenen Pass on the N3 early this morning. Both trucks caught fire after the collision, completely blocking the highway in both directions.
Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) spokesperson Sindi Msimang confirmed that emergency crews, including the fire department, are still on-site battling the blaze.
“The fire department is busy now trying to extinguish the fire on both trucks. There will be a cleanup process after that, and then the road will be reopened. Traffic officials are working very hard for the road to be opened,” Msimang stated.
According to an update from N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), both carriageways remain closed as authorities work to clear the wreckage. Traffic is backed up for several kilometres, with delays expected to persist for hours. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes if possible.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage.
Van Reenen Pass is notorious for crashes, particularly involving heavy-duty trucks navigating the steep inclines and winding sections of the route. Drivers are urged to exercise patience and follow instructions from traffic officials.
