The fatal crash that brought the R101 through Du Toitskloof Pass to a standstill on Tuesday morning has claimed the lives of three people.
According to the latest information available, the collision occurred at approximately 11:30 and involved three heavy motor vehicles and a yellow light delivery vehicle (bakkie).
Initial reports indicate that a truck collided with the bakkie, resulting in devastating consequences.
Two occupants of the bakkie died at the scene, while a third succumbed to injuries after being transported to hospital.
Authorities have confirmed that the crash involved three trucks and one light delivery vehicle.
Emergency services, law enforcement and recovery teams remain on scene, with the R101 still closed in both directions while rescue, recovery and investigation operations continue.
Motorists travelling through the area are urged to avoid the R101 and make use of alternative routes. Officials have advised drivers to use the N1 via the Huguenot Tunnel, the N2 via Sir Lowry’s Pass, or the R46 via Nuwekloof Pass until the road is reopened.
Long delays are expected as heavy recovery operations continue.
The exact circumstances leading up to the collision are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased pending the notification of their next of kin.
