Four people tragically lost their lives, while 17 were injured when an out-of-control truck crashed into an earlier truck crash scene between Kranskop and Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday afternoon.

Initial reports from the scene suggested more deaths as several injured people laid motionless scattered all over the scene.

However, KwaZulu-Natal emergency services spokesperson Robert Mckenzie set the record straight after attending the accident scene, confirming four deaths and 17 injuries.

“Tragically four people have sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Paramedics from KZN emergency services together with their colleagues from private ambulance services treated six patients at the scene of the crash,” said Mckenzie.

According to police, a truck transporting meat lost control and crashed into a wall.

While community members were busy helping themselves to the truck’s load of meat, a second truck with brake failure crashed into the people and other cars on the scene.

Mckenzie said police were on the scene, investigating the cause of the crash.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
