Traffic on the N7 has come to a standstill this afternoon after a veld fire broke out between Moorreesburg and Piketberg, forcing authorities to close the road in both directions. The closure is near the Koringberg turnoff, with emergency teams currently battling the blaze under tough conditions.
According to Swartland Municipality, West Coast Fire and Rescue Services are on scene trying to contain the fire which has spread rapidly due to strong winds and dry vegetation.
Visibility on the road has deteriorated sharply, making driving conditions extremely dangerous. Fire crews have reportedly requested the road closure to allow safe access for firefighting vehicles and personnel.
The shutdown is expected to continue until further notice, and motorists travelling north or south on the N7 are advised to turn around, delay their trips, or make use of alternative routes.
Truckers stuck in the queue are reporting long delays already building up on both sides. Some drivers told SA Trucker they have been parked for nearly an hour as smoke continues to drift across the highway. With winds changing direction unpredictably, conditions remain unstable.

Authorities are urging motorists not to attempt to push through, warning that vehicles driving into the smoke risk collisions or becoming trapped inside the fire zone. Those travelling long distance are encouraged to plan for extended delays or reroute via the R45 or R365 depending on direction of travel.
