Verwey Vervoer has issued a formal response following the circulation of a viral video on social media that allegedly shows one of its drivers appearing to be intoxicated after colliding with roadside barriers.
In the video, a Mercedes-Benz side tipper truck can be seen parked in a manner that partially blocks the left lane of a highway. On the left-hand side of the road, it appears that the truck continued moving for a short distance while striking the barriers before eventually coming to a stop.
A member of the public filmed the scene and approached the driver, who appeared to be intoxicated.
In a statement released on Thursday, the transport operator confirmed that it is aware of the footage and has launched an internal process to assess the matter.
The company stressed that road safety remains a non-negotiable priority, both for the public and for its own drivers.
According to Verwey Vervoer, its fleet is fitted with advanced AI-based camera and driver-monitoring systems that operate continuously.
These systems are designed to proactively monitor driver behaviour, support compliance with road traffic legislation, and protect all road users.
The company said this technology forms part of its broader commitment to industry best practice and responsible fleet management.

Verwey Vervoer further confirmed that it operates strictly in line with the National Road Traffic Act, 93 of 1996, which prohibits driving under the influence of alcohol or any substance that may impair a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.
The company added that its internal policies mirror and reinforce these legal requirements.
While the matter remains subject to internal review and due process, Verwey Vervoer made it clear that it does not condone drinking and driving or any conduct that could endanger lives, property, or public safety.
Any alleged breach of company policy or applicable legislation will be addressed in accordance with the company’s disciplinary codes, contractual obligations, and legal requirements.
Without prejudice and without admission of liability, Verwey Vervoer indicated that it is taking corrective steps, which may include counselling and alcohol-related intervention measures, aimed at preventing any recurrence and reinforcing responsible conduct among drivers.
The company concluded by thanking members of the public for bringing the incident to its attention and reaffirmed its commitment to safe, ethical, and professional transport operations on South Africa’s roads.
