Volvo Trucks South Africa has officially launched the Euro 6 version of its iconic FH truck – and it’s a solid step forward for greener long-haul transport in Mzansi.
With cleaner emissions, better fuel economy, and tech upgrades all round, the new FH Euro 6 is geared to meet the changing demands of the local trucking game.
The FH Euro 6 isn’t replacing the current Euro 3 or 5 models just yet, but it’s being added to give fleet operators more choice.
According to Volvo, the truck has been extensively tested for South African road conditions, and the engine’s performance – with four power options 420hp, 460hp, 500hp and 540hp – brings more torque with less diesel burn. That’s a big win with fuel prices where they are.
But let’s talk about the big draw: emissions. The Euro 6 standard is far ahead of the current local regulations (we’re still on Euro 2), cutting harmful nitrogen oxides and soot significantly.
It uses an advanced exhaust after-treatment system with cooled EGR, DPF, and AdBlue – all working together to keep things clean without compromising on power.

Driver comfort and safety also get a boost. From the plush Globetrotter XL cab with all the trimmings, to Volvo’s optional Camera Monitoring System that replaces mirrors for better night vision and visibility in bad weather, the trucks are designed to make life on the road smoother and safer.
Of course, there’s always the practical side – availability of 10ppm diesel and AdBlue is improving, but operators on remote routes will still need to plan ahead.
Volvo says its local dealer network is ready to support the new tech, and service intervals could even be stretched with proper care, giving fleets more uptime.
All in all, the FH Euro 6 is a step in the right direction. It’s not going to change the whole game overnight, but it does give forward-thinking operators the chance to go greener without sacrificing efficiency.
Whether you’re a big fleet or a small-time operator, it’s good to see real progress on cleaner trucking in SA.
