scene of fatal crash on n1 midrand

Watch: 2 drivers in fiery truck and 7 car pile-up on N1 in Midrand

Two motorists were burned to death on Wednesday on the N1 near Allandale Road in Midrand when their vehicles collided with a burning truck.

Both were burnt beyond recognition after their vehicles caught fire on impact.

Johannesburg metro spokesperson Xolani Fihla says eight vehicles were involved in the crash.

“At the moment, three lanes on the N1 north have been closed off and three lanes on the south bound have also been closed off.

“The JMPD accident unit is on scene and a case of culpable homicide will be opened at Midrand SAPS for further investigation,” says Fihla.

It’s unclear what caused the pile up.

“At the moment the cause has not yet been determined,” Fihla adds.

Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says two patients were taken to the hospital for further treatment.

“The other four patients were treated on scene; they were not transported.”

Traffic remained backed up in both directions of the N1 on Wednesday afternoon and motorists were urged to make use of alternative routes.
