A 15 man gang of armed robbers targeted Crossover International at the Lakeside Mall earlier today, 20 July at noon.
According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, the armed gang stormed the Crossover International shop, robbed employees and stole merchandise before fleeing the scene.
“A shoot-out ensued between security personnel and the suspects, but no injuries were reported,” said Sekele.
Video footage circulating on social media shows the gang fleeing with big bags of loot towards the mall exit.
As they approach their getaway cars, gunmen start shooting at the security running after the suspects.
“The suspects fled the scene in three vehicles, a silver Toyota Quest, a silver Toyota Etios sedan as well as a white Suzuki Swift.”
ER24, however, reported a man and woman were injured in the incident.
Spokesperson Russel Meiring said the paramedic service and Life Healthcare arrived on the scene to find the SAPS and security members already in attendance.
“Medics were led into the rear of a shop, where a man was found with a minor wound to his buttocks. A woman was found in another shop with a minor wound to her chest.
“Both patients were treated and transported to a private hospital for further care,” Meiring said.
The mall remained operational following the incident. Anyone with information may contact
