A major collision occurred on the M4 Southern Freeway southbound before the Edwin Swales offramp just before 16h00 this Wednesday afternoon, causing severe traffic disruptions. A truck plowed into multiple vehicles, with one of the vehicles becoming pinned against the centre concrete barrier.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, with Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics providing urgent care to one critically injured person.
The individual was stabilised on-site before being transported to the hospital for further treatment. Four other people sustained injuries, ranging from minor to serious, and were also attended to by emergency medical teams at the scene.
The incident has resulted in significant traffic delays on the M4 Southern freeway southbound, with motorists advised to avoid the area due to the ongoing recovery efforts and road clearance. The northbound lanes towards Durban CBD are also affected as emergency services work to manage the scene and clear the wreckage.
The cause of the crash is not known at this stage.
