The N2 highway between Swellendam and Heidelberg has been closed following a fatal head-on collision that claimed seven lives early on Monday morning.
The crash, involving a Haval SUV and a Mazda sedan, resulted in seven fatalities at the scene, while five other people sustained critical injuries.
Emergency services rushed to the site to provide urgent medical assistance, with paramedics stabilizing the injured before transporting them to nearby hospitals.
As at 13h30 authorities were still combing the scene for evidence before clearing the wreckage.
Motorists travelling along the N2 are advised to seek alternative routes as the cleanup operation is expected to take several hours.
The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, and officials urge drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
