Watch: Are Drivers Always to Blame for Smoking Brakes Going Downhill?

A video of a truck speeding down Town Hill in Pietermaritzburg, its tyres smoking from overheating brakes, caused a lot of debate in the trucking community. Was the driver entirely at fault, or could this have been caused by a mechanical failure?

The incident occurred on the N3 south-bound at Town Hill in Pietermaritzburg back in 2022.

In the clip, it’s clear that the truck was out of control, barreling downhill at a dangerous speed. Many would be quick to point fingers at the driver, accusing them of failing to gear down and overusing the brakes.

After all, every trucker knows that continuous braking on a downhill stretch generates heat, which can lead to brake fade or complete failure.

However, is it always that simple? Could mechanical faults like poorly maintained brakes or a faulty retarder play a role? Or do incidents like these usually boil down to driver error?

Just recently, SA Trucker reported on a fatal accident where a trucker lost control and crashed before the Mariannhill Toll Gate.

These recurring incidents beg the question – are trucking companies doing enough to maintain their fleets? Or are drivers being sent down these treacherous routes with equipment that’s simply not roadworthy?

Of course, driver training also comes into play. Knowing when to gear down and how to use engine braking effectively is essential for any trucker, especially on steep descents like Town Hill. Yet, in high-pressure environments, are drivers cutting corners to save time, ultimately putting their lives – and others’ – at risk?

We want to hear your thoughts. Are smoking brakes the result of poor driving, mechanical failure, or a mix of both? Should stricter regulations be put in place for fleet maintenance and driver training to avoid these tragic incidents?
