Watch: ATDF-ASA Shutdown Brings N3 to a Standstill near Tugela River as Truckers Revolt Against AARTO

A major shutdown is under way on the N3 between Estcourt Ultra City and the Bergville Toll Plaza where members of the All Truck Drivers Forum Allied South African, ATDF-ASA, are protesting against the implementation of the AARTO demerit system.

The shutdown began at about 23:25 on Wednesday night, 26 November 2025, and is expected to continue through Thursday. Organisers say the blockade will remain in place until government addresses their concerns.

Both northbound and southbound lanes have been completely blocked, with trucks positioned across the freeway to stop all movement. Reports from the ground indicate that protestors have been taking keys from drivers who refuse to join the shutdown, leaving many stranded and forcing traffic to a complete standstill.

According to a statement circulating under the ATDF-ASA banner, the organisation is calling on South African truckers to down tools and join the action, arguing that the AARTO demerit system unfairly targets South African drivers while foreign nationals remain unaffected.

Trucks must stop until government resolves the matter, the statement reads. The group is demanding a full review of the system before it is implemented.

Traffic Impact

The blockade has caused heavy congestion stretching for kilometres in both directions. Motorists and freight operators are urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes wherever possible.
