Holiday travel is in full swing, and with it comes increased risks on South Africa’s busy roads. A shocking video making rounds on social media highlights the dangers of towing trailers, especially when combined with high speeds and improper techniques.
In the video, captured by a side tipper truck’s rearview camera, a bakkie towing a trailer transporting a minibus attempts to overtake the truck.
As it nears the axles of the front trailer, the bakkie’s trailer begins to sway from side to side.
The instability causes the bakkie to lose control and it’s drawn into the trailer’s wheels.
The bakkie is dragged a few metres before breaking loose and spiralling off the road into the centre median.
While it’s unclear what triggered the swaying, it is a stark warning to motorists towing trailers.
Driving With a Trailer: What Motorists Must Know
Driving a vehicle with a trailer is vastly different from regular driving. The extra weight and dynamics can quickly lead to instability if not handled correctly.

Here are some tips to stay safe when towing a trailer:
- Speed Control: Trailers are more likely to sway at higher speeds. Stick to the speed limit or slower if road conditions demand.
- Weight Distribution: Ensure your trailer is loaded correctly, with heavier items placed over the axles to maintain stability.
- Tyre Pressure: Check tyre pressure on both the towing vehicle and the trailer before your trip. Incorrect pressure can cause poor handling.
- Braking Distance: A trailer increases stopping distance. Avoid sudden braking, especially at high speeds.
- Avoid Sudden Steering Movements: If the trailer starts to wiggle, resist the urge to steer sharply. Instead, reduce speed gradually while holding the steering wheel steady.
- Know Your Limits: Don’t overload your trailer, and ensure your vehicle is rated to tow the weight safely.
A Note for Truckers
Truckers, too, need to be cautious around vehicles towing trailers. Give them extra space and avoid sudden manoeuvres that could disturb their stability. Keep an eye on your mirrors to anticipate risks, especially when overtaking or being overtaken.
Stay Safe This Holiday Season
The roads are busier than usual during the holidays, and patience is key to ensuring everyone reaches their destination safely. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a truck, a bakkie, or a sedan, remember that trailers demand extra care.
