Traffic around the busy N2/M7 interchange in Durban has ground to a near standstill after a serious crash involving a Zambian-registered truck and a diesel tanker.
It is understood that the Zambian truck was travelling down the M7 eastbound when it allegedly suffered brake failure. The driver reportedly lost control while descending towards the N2 bridge and collided with a diesel tanker at the bottom of the interchange.
According to ALS Paramedics, who are on scene, occupants of the Zambian truck are currently trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency services are working to extricate them while ensuring the scene remains as safe as possible under extremely hazardous conditions.
The diesel tanker overturned and sustained significant damage and is leaking heavily, posing a serious environmental and safety risk in the area. A substantial volume of diesel has spilled across the roadway, creating slippery conditions and increasing the risk of further incidents. Authorities have cordoned off sections of the interchange as specialised teams prepare for containment and clean-up operations.
