Durban – Traffic came to a standstill on Sunday morning after a car carrier truck overturned on the N3 Durban-bound carriageway just before Pavilion Shopping Mall.
The crash happened at around 6:30am when the driver reportedly lost control of the loaded carrier, causing the trailer to flip and spill its cargo of Ford Rangers across the highway.
Both Durban-bound lanes were completely blocked, bringing traffic to a halt as emergency services and law enforcement rushed to the scene.
The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was treated on site. Authorities were forced to wait for a heavy recovery tow truck to remove the wreckage, resulting in major delays for motorists heading into Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, confirmed the incident and dispatched a response team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate.

“Our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, working with Durban Metro Police, is managing the traffic flow. Importantly, we are working with the National Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, to fast-track the transition of cargo from road to rail,” said Duma.
Cleanup operations were still underway at the time of reporting, and motorists were urged to use alternative routes or delay travel until the highway was reopened.
