Motorists travelling on the N3 westbound through Durban are being urged to avoid the area after a reported cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery left an armoured cash van engulfed in flames this Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened shortly after the Jan Smuts Avenue off-ramp near Sherwood, in the vicinity of Bonela and past The Dome Church (Jesus Dome), at approximately 16:54. Initial reports indicate that shots were fired during the robbery, although authorities have yet to confirm the full circumstances.
Video footage from the scene shows the cash-in-transit vehicle burning in the middle of the roadway while traffic comes to a standstill. Thick smoke can be seen rising above the freeway as emergency services and law enforcement respond to the incident.
Traffic heavily affected
The N3 westbound remains severely affected, with motorists advised to avoid travelling past the Jesus Dome on-ramp towards Spaghetti Junction until the scene has been cleared.
Traffic delays are expected as police secure the area and investigate the reported robbery.
Drivers are urged to remain patient, follow instructions from traffic officials and avoid stopping near the scene unless directed to do so.
Reports of shots fired
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing multiple gunshots during the alleged robbery. However, it remains unclear whether anyone was injured or whether any arrests have been made.
Authorities have not yet released official information regarding the suspects, the amount of cash involved or whether the robbers managed to flee with any money.
