A terrifying incident involving a scholar transport minibus taxi has been caught on CCTV in Kensington, Johannesburg, after the vehicle rolled backwards and crashed into a perimeter wall, leaving pupils scrambling for safety.
The incident is believed to have occurred at around 16:40 on King Edward Street. In the footage, the minibus taxi can be seen rolling backwards uncontrollably, swaying from side to side before violently colliding with a wall.
On impact, the force of the crash caused the taxi door to detach, resulting in some pupils being thrown out of the vehicle. Moments later, children are seen exiting the minibus and running away from the scene in apparent shock as they seek safety.
The exact cause of the incident remains unclear at this stage. It is not yet known how many pupils were injured or whether emergency medical services transported any of them to hospital.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place in Kensington, a suburb east of central Johannesburg.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement confirming what led to the minibus rolling backwards.
The footage has raised renewed concerns around scholar transport safety, particularly following recent deadly crashes involving school transport vehicles elsewhere in the country.
Parents and road safety advocates have once again called for stricter oversight, proper vehicle maintenance, and improved safety measures to protect learners.
Investigations into the incident are expected to continue as officials work to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
