A tragic crash involving a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle and a truck has claimed one life and left two others seriously injured on the R40 near Riverside Mall early Tuesday morning.
Dashcam footage circulating on social media shows the moment the CIT van rear-ended a heavy-duty truck in a high-speed impact.
The front of the CIT van was completely crushed, indicating the force of the collision.
According to first responders, one guard died on impact while the driver and another occupant were critically injured and trapped inside the wreckage. Emergency services had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate them.
Sadly, despite desperate efforts by paramedics, one of the injured guards passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it’s believed the driver may have been distracted at the time of the crash as the vehicle does not slow down nor show brake lights.
SBV Services’ group CEO, Mark Barrett, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an employee. “I am deeply saddened that one of our employees has passed away as a result of this accident. On behalf of everyone at SBV, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues,” said Barrett.
The incident caused major traffic delays on the R40, with debris and vehicle parts scattered across the road.
