Truckers have been warned to remain vigilant after a daring theft was captured on camera in Randfontein on Saturday afternoon.
The incident took place near KFC at Tambotie Mall at around 17h36 on 14 March 2026, where a thief was filmed stealing batteries from a parked truck.
According to footage circulating online, the suspect calmly approached the unattended truck while carrying automated tools believed to be used for loosening battery clamps and mounts. The man then opened the battery compartment and began loosening the batteries.
Instead of removing them immediately, the suspect closed the battery cover again and walked away from the truck, seemingly to avoid drawing attention.
A few minutes later, he returned driving a white Hyundai with registration CPV217GP. The suspect parked the vehicle next to the truck and opened the boot before quickly getting to work.
The video shows him removing two batteries from the truck and placing them into the boot of the Hyundai before driving off from the scene.
Truck batteries are a common target for thieves due to their resale value, and incidents like this have become increasingly frequent at shopping areas and roadside parking spots where trucks are left unattended.
Truckers are urged to remain cautious when stopping at public areas, especially when parking outside designated truck stops. Leaving a vehicle unattended, even for a short visit to nearby shops, can create an opportunity for criminals.
Drivers are encouraged to park in visible, secure areas whenever possible and to keep an eye on their vehicles.
Anyone who may recognise the man seen in the video or who has information about the incident is urged to contact their nearest police station.
