Watch: Fuel prices ‘fall’ at one garage while rest of SA sees hikes

Motorists across South Africa were hit with steep fuel price increases on Tuesday, adding more pressure on already stretched transport costs.

Petrol prices went up over R23 while diesel now costs over R26 per litre in coastal towns.

But at one garage, fuel prices appeared to be doing the exact opposite.

In a moment that has since caught attention online, a fuel price board at a filling station was seen falling while the rest of the country faced sharp increases at the pumps.

The incident, captured on camera, shows the price signage collapsing, creating the illusion of a price drop many drivers have been hoping for.

While it’s not the relief motorists were looking for, the clip has given drivers and operators a light moment on a day dominated by rising fuel costs.

With diesel and petrol prices climbing significantly this month, transport operators are once again feeling the squeeze, with knock-on effects expected across the supply chain.

For now, this remains the only “price drop” drivers will see.

Happy April Fools’ Day.
