Video footage from an onboard truck camera has captured an apparent hit-and-run collision involving a bakkie towing a camp caravan, a heavy-duty truck, and a minibus taxi on the N2 near Riviersonderend. The incident occurred on 21 November 2025.
According to the footage, the driver of the bakkie attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on a double barrier line, forcing his vehicle and the attached caravan into a narrow space between the truck and the taxi.
In the process, the caravan struck and damaged the truck’s side mirror, while the taxi was clipped on its right-rear side. Despite causing visible damage to both vehicles, the bakkie driver failed to stop at the scene and continued driving.
The dashcam footage clearly displays the registration number of the bakkie as HPZ 691 EC. The incident has raised serious concerns regarding road safety and compliance with traffic laws, particularly relating to overtaking restrictions and the responsibilities of drivers towing additional loads.
At this stage it is not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured in the collision, and no official comment has been issued by authorities. Members of the public who may have information about the incident, or who recognise the taxi involved, are encouraged to come forward.
Hit-and-run incidents pose a significant danger to motorists and remain a major contributor to road fatalities and vehicle damage. Road users are reminded that the law requires all drivers involved in a collision to stop, assess the situation, exchange details, and report the matter to the relevant authorities.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
