When you’re driving into thick mist, smoke, or any condition where you can’t see far ahead – voetsek the speed! This video is a perfect example of what can go horribly wrong when drivers don’t adjust their speed to match visibility.
In the clip (watch it below), the recording vehicle is cruising behind a white bakkie on a stretch of road that suddenly gets swallowed by dense smoke – likely from a nearby bush fire.
Just before the smoke, a silver SUV overtakes them recklessly, with zero idea what’s ahead.
Seconds later, visibility drops to almost nothing. Out of the smoke, a white car appears, stationary and stretched across the lane – clearly involved in a crash. The SUV that overtook is now stuck behind another wrecked car it has rear-ended.
The recording driver manages a slick manoeuvre around the chaos, but just as he breathes a sigh of relief, bang! He gets violently rear-ended by another vehicle that also didn’t slow down in time.

While it’s not clear where this happened, the message is loud and clear – when visibility drops, so should your speed.
Here’s why:
- Reduced reaction time – if you can’t see, you can’t stop in time.
- Hidden hazards – crashes, stalled vehicles, or roadworks can be right in front of you.
- Chain-reaction crashes – these are common in smoke and mist, as drivers pile into each other before even realising what’s happening.
Trucker Tip:
If you can’t see beyond your stopping distance, you’re driving too fast. Period. Flashers on, hazards ready, and ignore the urge to push on like it’s sunny and clear.
Don’t become the reason for the next pile-up. Watch the video below and share it with someone who needs to open their eyes before it’s too late.
