A hot air balloon pilot with 25 years of experience had his skills put to the test on Saturday morning, expertly navigating an emergency landing that narrowly avoided disaster on the busy N3 near Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal.

In a video making the rounds on social media, the hot air balloon is seen drifting low across the highway, with several trucks passing directly underneath.

Just after it clears the road, the balloon crashes into a tree, preventing what could have been a dangerous situation. The balloon deflates dramatically, landing near the Camperdown police station.

The footage captures the tense moments as the balloon collapses, with a bystander’s voice heard saying, “It collapsed in front of my house.” Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident.

Warwick Cook, the owner and pilot of Hot Air Ballooning SA based in Tala Valley, explained to The Witness that while the situation may have looked alarming, the landing was controlled and the use of trees as “brakes” was part of the plan.

“When we’re flying, we look for safe landing spots. However, powerlines and the surrounding terrain made it difficult to land before crossing the highway. Using trees to slow us down is common practice in our line of work,” Cook said, describing it as their “AVS braking system.”

Cook had been flying a group of seven passengers, including two seniors in their 70s, as part of a birthday celebration. The group had undergone a safety briefing before take-off, which included instructions for preparing for landing.

“The baskets are designed for safety. We instructed the passengers to crouch at the bottom and hold on to the handles, which is standard procedure. Everything went as expected, including the deflation of the balloon,” Cook said.

After the successful landing, the relieved passengers were treated to sugary drinks to calm their nerves. The pilot’s expert handling of the situation has been met with widespread praise online.

Cathleen de Bruin commented on Facebook: “That did not look like a crash; he actually landed very well for an unplanned landing.”

Another commenter, Craig Viljoen, said: “Brilliant pilot, well done. Absolutely magic and awesome.”

Despite the dramatic video, this was a demonstration of experience and quick thinking that prevented a much more dangerous outcome.
