The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that a truck travelling on the N1 North lost control, crossed the centre median, collided with multiple vehicles, and overturned on the N1 South.
Traffic ground to a halt in both directions, causing significant congestion on the N1 and Gordon Road.
Motorists on the onramp found themselves stranded, unable to get on or off the highway as emergency teams scrambled to the scene.
A video circulating on social media shows the aftermath, with the truck blocking one lane and its load of wooden boards scattered across the other, leaving no clear passage for traffic in either direction.
At least one vehicle appears crushed beneath the truck, highlighting the severity of the impact.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area, as authorities work to clear the scene and open the roadway.
