A truck driver was injured after his truck overturned on the N1, approximately 30km outside Bloemfontein towards Johannesburg, before looters allegedly broke open the trailer and stole a significant amount of the cargo.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain unclear, and it is not yet known what caused the driver to lose control of the truck.
What unfolded after the rollover has, however, sparked outrage.
While the injured truck driver was still at the scene, opportunistic looters allegedly forced open the trailer and began removing cargo. In a video shared with SA Trucker, several people can be seen carrying goods from the damaged trailer and loading them into waiting vehicles before driving away.
The incident is the latest in a growing number of cases where crash scenes have been targeted by looters instead of people offering assistance to injured motorists. Cargo theft following truck crashes continues to be a major concern for the transport industry, often resulting in substantial financial losses and complicating recovery efforts.
The truck driver’s condition has not yet been confirmed, and authorities have not released further information about the crash or the value of the stolen cargo. It is also unclear whether any arrests have been made.
The footage serves as another stark reminder of the dangers truck drivers face on South African roads, not only from crashes but also from criminals who exploit these incidents for personal gain.
