A truck carrying unknown gas cylinders has exploded on the R71 near Magoebaskloof, above Ruskamp, causing massive fireballs and a complete shutdown of the route.
According to first responders and videos sent to SA Trucker, the truck caught alight before erupting in a series of loud, fiery explosions.
Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after the first calls for help, and but they haven’t started battling the fire because of the explosions. The gas involved remains unidentified at this stage.
In a dramatic video clip, a motorist approaching the scene is seen driving towards the blaze when sudden fireballs light up the sky. Realising the danger, he quickly turns around to escape – a decision that likely saved his life.
The R71 is currently CLOSED in both directions, and it will likely remain shut for an extended period due to the scale of the fire and ongoing risk.
Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the R71 through Magoebaskloof.
Alternative routes:
– R81 via Modjadjiskloof (Recommended)
– R528 via George’s Valley, although this road is heavily potholed and traffic is building up fast.
