A hectic scene unfolded in Krugersdorp on Saturday morning when two fully loaded trucks reportedly lost control while descending the R28, smashing into a long queue of vehicles and leaving many people injured. The chaos happened near the N14 and Hendrick Potgieter intersection, a busy section used heavily by trucks and daily commuters.
According to eyewitnesses, both truck drivers appeared to lose their brakes while coming downhill, causing their massive rigs to pick up speed before crashing into several vehicles on the road. Some motorists say they could hear hooters blasting before the impact as drivers tried desperately to warn traffic ahead.
Videos shared on social media show total carnage on the highway, with more than 20 cars crushed, pushed off the road, or stacked into each other. Several people can be seen sitting injured and shocked next to their vehicles while others walk around in disbelief trying to find loved ones.
Emergency services rushed to the scene and confirmed that multiple patients have been transported to hospital. Exact injury numbers are not yet confirmed, but witnesses say at least a dozen people were hurt, including some seriously.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department has completely shut down the R28 northbound while rescue crews work through the wreckage. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla urged motorists to stay away from the area and find alternative routes, warning that delays around Krugersdorp will remain heavy for most of the day.

Traffic is currently being redirected and recovery teams are assessing the damage. The cause of the loss of control is under investigation.
Road users are asked to remain patient and drive carefully as emergency workers continue with rescue operations.
