Watch: Multiple Truck Crashes Shut Down N3 Durbanbound Near Lions River

SA Trucker, this morning’s run on the N3 in the KZN Midlands is a proper nightmare. Two separate truck crashes have brought Durbanbound traffic to a complete standstill near Lions River, just before interchange 114.

According to N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), the first accident happened shortly after 6am on Sunday morning when two trucks collided on the southbound carriageway. The impact has completely blocked the entire lane heading towards Durban and traffic is now stacked for several kilometres.

A container truck dropped the shipping container on the roadway after colliding with a tautliner truck.

While emergency services were still responding to the initial scene, a secondary smash unfolded minutes later. Another container truck reportedly ploughed into the back of a car carrier truck after the driver failed to stop in time upon approaching the stationary traffic. That second hit has added serious complications to an already messy situation on the highway.

At this stage, there’s no confirmed information on injuries in either collision. Paramedics and recovery crews are on scene, but it may take a while before the road is cleared. Judging by the chaos, the N3 southbound could be closed for an extended period.

Motorists are strongly urged to delay travel if they can. If you’re already en route, take it easy and be alert when approaching traffic build-ups because visibility, reaction time and safe following distance are crucial. Secondary crashes like this are exactly what happens when drivers come flying into unexpected standstills.

N3TC issued this alert at 07h03:
“N3Traffic: N3Crash: N3 4 20.2 S Durban Bound near Lions River I/C 114. Two trucks involved. Southbound obstructed. Traffic stacked on scene. Your patience is appreciated.”

We’ll keep following developments and update as soon as more details come through on injuries and recovery progress.
