The N4 has been completely closed at the Waterval Boven Tunnel following a serious multi-vehicle crash inside the tunnel this afternoon.
According to reports from the scene, two trucks were involved in a head-on collision inside the tunnel, along with several other light motor vehicles. The impact has left the tunnel completely obstructed, with wreckage scattered across both lanes.
Videos circulating online show damaged trucks blocking the roadway, with other vehicles trapped behind them inside the tunnel. Emergency services have rushed to the scene and are currently working to assess injuries and clear the wreckage.
At this stage, the full extent of injuries has not yet been confirmed. Traffic authorities have closed the N4 in both directions at the tunnel, and motorists are being urged to use alternative routes until further notice.

The closure is expected to cause significant delays along this key route, particularly for freight operators travelling between Mpumalanga and Gauteng.
