An off-duty truck driver has lost his life following a devastating crash on the N11 on Saturday morning, in an incident that has once again highlighted the dangers on South Africa’s long-distance routes.
According to information available to SA Trucker, the driver, identified as Wandile Lacodier, was travelling with his family from his home in Newcastle to Johannesburg when the collision occurred. The crash involved a heavy motor vehicle with a side tipper trailer and his Audi sedan.
Images from the scene paint a grim picture, with the Audi crushed underneath the trailer, leaving little chance of survival for those inside. The force of the impact suggests a high-energy collision, although the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash remains unclear at this stage.
The off-duty driver sadly succumbed to his injuries on scene. His wife and children, who were travelling with him, sustained serious injuries but survived the crash. Emergency services responded to the scene and transported the injured to hospital for further medical treatment.
At this point, authorities have not confirmed the cause of the accident. Investigations are expected to focus on factors such as road conditions, visibility, and possible driver actions leading up to the collision.
