The Department’s spokesperson, Muneera Allie, said the road was immediately closed to allow emergency services to carry out rescue operations and for investigators to begin piecing together what led to the crash.

“The N1 had to be closed to facilitate rescue operations and allow authorities to conduct a full investigation,” she said.

The stretch of the N1 where the incident occurred is a known transport corridor linking the interior with the Western Cape, and it’s heavily used by trucks and cross-border buses.

By midday, authorities were still on scene, with traffic being diverted and delays expected for most of the day.

Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.

SA Trucker extends condolences to the loved ones of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured.
