Traffic came to a standstill early Monday morning as angry protesters blocked off the N1 at the busy Diepkloof interchange in Johannesburg, causing major disruptions for motorists.
The protest erupted at the split of the N12 east and N1 north near the Viking/Golden Highway offramp.
Motorists were forced to make U-turns and reroute via alternative roads, with many reporting the chaos on social media.
According to SAfm, the protest action was led by Diepkloof hostel residents demanding urgent government intervention in the form of a proper water supply, sanitation, and development in the area.
They say their grievances have been ignored for far too long.
“They only remember us during elections. We’ve been crying for toilets and clean water for years,” shouted one resident during a live call-in on the radio.
Law enforcement officials were on the scene monitoring the situation, but the road remained closed for several hours, affecting rush hour traffic heading towards Johannesburg CBD and Sandton.
Frustrated truck drivers and motorists took to social media to share videos of the burning tyres and blockades, warning others to avoid the area.
“Diepkloof split is a no-go zone this morning. Protestors have shut it down. Rather take Soweto Highway or head back via the Golden Highway if you can,” one user posted.
No injuries were reported at the time of publishing. Motorists are advised to remain cautious and follow traffic updates as authorities work to clear the scene and restore order.
