Watch | R101 Closed Due to Bus Fire on Du Toitskloof Pass

A late-night blaze forced authorities to shut down the N1 at Du Toitskloof Pass after a bus caught fire on the Worcester side of the pass.

The Zimbabwe-bound bus, which departed from Cape Town, reportedly burst into flames while making its way down the mountain road.

Fortunately, all 80 passengers on board were safely evacuated, though most of their luggage did not survive the fire.

Among the belongings, fire crews identified gas bottles, raising concerns over possible explosions as they worked to control the blaze.

Emergency personnel from the Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services were on scene by 21h00, actively battling flames that had spread to the surrounding slopes.

Due to these efforts, the N1 at Du Toitskloof remains closed to ensure the safety of both the emergency teams and the public.

Authorities have requested that motorists avoid the area until further notice.

By early morning, the Cape Winelands District Municipality confirmed that the fire was under control.

Fire Services continue mopping up operations, working to secure the area before reopening the pass. No injuries or fatalities have been reported.

Emergency services spokesperson Anesca Roodt stated, “Our teams remain on site to ensure full containment and prevent any flare-ups. We ask the public to stay clear of the area until we officially reopen the pass.”
