A truck driver has been caught on video making a reckless overtaking manoeuvre on the N1, approximately 30 kilometres outside Colesberg towards Johannesburg earlier this Thursday morning.
The footage shows the recording vehicle travelling properly in its lane as it approaches a right-hand bend. As the vehicles enter the bend, a truck towing flat-deck Superlink trailers suddenly appears travelling on the wrong side of the road while overtaking.
The manoeuvre takes place across solid barrier lines, at a point where drivers travelling in opposite directions have limited visibility of what may be approaching around the bend.
Faced with the oncoming truck, the recording driver is forced to move further towards the left to avoid what could easily have become a catastrophic head-on collision.
One bad decision can change everything
Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres a heavy vehicle driver can make when visibility is restricted. With a fully loaded combination vehicle potentially weighing many tonnes, there is very little room for error when an oncoming vehicle suddenly appears.
A truck travelling at highway speed also needs significantly more distance to stop or change direction than a passenger vehicle. That makes blind overtaking on bends particularly dangerous.
For professional drivers, the consequences extend far beyond the possibility of a crash.
A reckless manoeuvre can result in serious injury or death, criminal charges, a traffic conviction, damage to the vehicle and cargo, and potentially the loss of a driver’s livelihood.
Transport companies also have a responsibility to know how their drivers are operating on the road. A driver’s decision to take an unnecessary risk can ultimately place the company’s reputation, insurance position and operating licence under pressure.
Getting there late is better than not getting there
There is no load, delivery deadline or pressure from a depot that justifies gambling with lives on the N1.
Professional truck driving requires patience, anticipation and discipline. If the road markings prohibit overtaking or visibility is restricted, the answer is simple: stay in your lane and wait.
The few seconds saved by a dangerous overtake are simply not worth the potential consequences.
For truck drivers watching this footage, the message is straightforward: your job depends on getting the load there safely — not on getting there first.
