Motorists travelling on the N3 South near Heidelberg are being urged to take alternative routes following a serious multi-vehicle accident involving 11 cars and a caravan.
The accident occurred just after the Klipriver bridge earlier today and has caused significant disruption on the busy highway.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that a fire next to the N3 caused heavy smoke to drift onto the road, severely limiting visibility for drivers.
This low visibility is believed to have triggered the chain accident, with vehicles piling up one after the other.
Emergency services are currently on the scene, attending to those involved and clearing the wreckage.
Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported yet, but several motorists have sustained injuries and have been transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
