Witbank — Several truck drivers have reportedly been shot at Sobotshane Transport’s depot in Witbank after a protest over unpaid benefits turned violent earlier today.
According to sources, the drivers were demanding their retrenchment benefits after allegedly being unfairly dismissed a few months ago. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear at this stage, but it’s alleged that security guards opened fire on the protesting drivers.
In videos sent to SA Trucker, two men can be seen lying on the ground after being shot, while another appears to have been wounded in the back. The condition of the victims is not yet known.
This incident comes amid growing unrest in the trucking industry, with widespread rumours of a national shutdown reportedly planned for Monday. It’s not yet clear who is behind the call for the shutdown, but messages and voice notes circulating on social media have sparked concern among transporters and drivers alike.
