Mbombela – The notorious R40 road in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, has been shut down this afternoon following a serious multi-vehicle crash near Riverside Mall on Tuesday, 16 September 2025.
According to CCTV footage that has since surfaced, a minibus taxi is seen blatantly ignoring a red traffic light before ploughing into a car that had the right of way. The impact sent the taxi out of control, where it then slammed into a bus that was stopped at the same red light from the opposite direction.
The collision left many people injured, with paramedics still busy at the scene treating patients and rushing the seriously hurt to nearby hospitals. The exact number of casualties is not yet confirmed.
The R40 is currently completely closed as emergency officials and law enforcement clear the wreckage and assist the injured. Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the route until further notice.
