A truck driver had a frightening experience on the N1 near Beaufort West on Monday afternoon after strong winds caused his truck and trailer combination to overturn, with video footage of the incident now circulating widely online.
According to information shared with SA Trucker, the incident happened about 10km outside Beaufort West. The video, filmed from a vehicle travelling behind the truck, captures the moment powerful crosswinds hit the combination. The trailer can be seen losing stability before being blown onto its side.
Within seconds, the rigid truck is also pulled over as the trailer drags it down with tremendous force. Dust and debris are seen blowing across the road as motorists slow down in shock.
The truck was reportedly transporting beds at the time of the incident. Shortly after the truck overturned, several looters allegedly rushed to the scene and began stealing the cargo from the truck.
Strong winds have been causing dangerous driving conditions across parts of the Western Cape and the Karoo region, with authorities warning motorists, especially truck drivers, to remain alert.

SA Trucker urges truckers transporting high or light loads to exercise extreme caution when travelling through windy areas. Crosswinds can easily destabilise trailers, particularly empty or lightly loaded combinations, making them vulnerable to rollovers.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed, keep both hands firmly on the steering wheel, and avoid sudden steering movements during strong wind conditions. Fleet operators are also encouraged to monitor weather alerts and consider delaying trips when conditions become too dangerous.
No official information regarding injuries has been confirmed at this stage.
