A truck driver narrowly avoided a potentially deadly situation after thieves allegedly stole two rear wheels from his parked truck while he slept inside the cab at the Engen Big Bird garage on the N1 southbound in Midrand.
The incident was captured on video by a witness as it happened moments ago this morning at 04h30. According to the witness, the thieves worked quickly and efficiently, first removing the wheel nuts before taking two wheels from the rear axle of the Volvo truck.
Fearing for his own safety, the witness chose not to confront the suspects and instead recorded the theft from a distance.
The incident highlights the growing problem of tyre theft targeting parked trucks, particularly at unsafe locations around Gauteng. Apart from the financial loss, such thefts place drivers at serious risk, as a truck missing wheels could cause a catastrophic crash if the driver unknowingly pulls away.
Truck drivers are urged to avoid parking in isolated or unsecured areas whenever possible and instead make use of properly designated truck stops or facilities with adequate security.
SA Trucker reminds drivers to conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection before moving off, even after short rest breaks, to ensure all wheels and other critical components are intact.
