Watch: Truck crashes into Cape Town property after wet-road swerve on Bosmansdam Road

A truck ended up crashing into a private property off Bosmansdam Road in Cape Town on Thursday afternoon after a fast-developing intersection incident that was captured on CCTV.

The crash happened at around 13:07 and shows how quickly a routine traffic movement can turn serious when wet roads and split-second decisions come into play.

According to footage from the scene, a minibus taxi was waiting to turn right into Ocean Spirit Avenue when a car and a truck approached the intersection. As the minibus began moving across the lanes, the car immediately stopped to avoid a collision.

The truck, however, was unable to stop in time due to the wet road surface. In an attempt to avoid a direct impact with the minibus, the driver swerved sharply to the left. That manoeuvre caused the truck to lose traction and control, sending it off the roadway and straight into a nearby premises.

It collides with a car as it heads for the house.

The impact left visible damage to the property. At the time of writing, no fatalities have been reported, although the scene caused major disruption as emergency teams and recovery crews worked to clear the area.

The CCTV footage clearly shows how quickly the sequence unfolded, with only seconds between the minibus crossing, the car stopping, and the truck losing control.

While investigations are expected to follow, the incident once again highlights how dangerous wet-weather driving can be, especially for heavy-duty vehicles operating at intersections.

Driving safely on wet roads: key reminders for truckers and motorists

Wet conditions remain one of the biggest risk factors on South African roads, particularly during sudden rain or early morning moisture.

For heavy vehicles, stopping distance increases significantly on wet tar, and even a small increase in speed can make braking ineffective in an emergency situation. Keeping a safe following distance is critical, especially in busy urban intersections like Bosmansdam Road.

Drivers are also reminded to avoid harsh steering inputs. Sudden swerves, like the one seen in this incident, can easily cause a loss of control when tyres lose grip on wet surfaces. Smooth braking and controlled steering remain the safest response.

Tyre condition plays a major role as well. Worn tyres reduce water dispersion and increase the risk of aquaplaning, where the vehicle rides on top of water instead of the road surface.

Visibility is another factor. In wet weather, headlights should always be on, and speed should be adjusted even if traffic appears light.

Ultimately, defensive driving remains the best protection. Reading traffic flow early, anticipating sudden movements from smaller vehicles, and allowing extra stopping space can make the difference between a near miss and a major crash.

Authorities are expected to review CCTV footage as part of the investigation into the Bosmansdam Road incident.
