A truck driver narrowly escaped with his life after his vehicle veered off the road and tore through dense bush for nearly 300 metres between Gwayi and Lupane in Zimbabwe this Sunday morning.
Video footage from the scene shows a clear path carved through the bush, with large trees uprooted and flattened as the truck forced its way deep into the veld. The damage stretches for an estimated 300 metres from the road, highlighting the force and loss of control during the incident.
According to sources who spoke to the driver, he escaped without visible physical injuries, although he complained of chest pains after the crash.
The driver reportedly explained that the trouble began when he engaged the retarder. He heard a strange sound and immediately switched it off, but things went downhill fast from there.
“He said the truck then locked in gear and the steering became extremely hard,” a source revealed. “He couldn’t turn it anymore, and that’s when it left the road.”
With limited control, the truck plunged into the bush, violently throwing the driver around inside the cab as it smashed through multiple trees before finally coming to a stop.
No other vehicles were involved.
Motorists and operators are reminded to report any unusual mechanical behaviour immediately, especially when it involves critical systems like retarders and steering, as things can go south very quickly.
